Roman Tombstones Project Guidelines:
1. Create a tombstone based upon the examples.
It may be a simple drawing, however extra credit will be offered for a three dimensional stone. (25 points for a three dimensional tombstone, 50 for a three dimensional stone with a sculptural element, and 100 points for a stone that accurately recreates a Roman tombstone [such as the tombstone in the image above] in both size [more than 10 inches high], artistry, and form).
If you elect to use a Latin inscription from the examples, you will have to add data on the person buried in the tomb using the guidelines for how Romans recorded information about the deceased on their tombstones.This should either use information from the Latin inscription to determine the name/occupation/etc. of the deceased or add imagined information if none is present in the inscription.
2. Write a short story (1 page) about the deceased individual(s). Using the information from the tombstone, (either the quotation or information about the individual) and historical data gleaned from "As the Romans" imagine some aspect of their life and its conclusion. This will be shared in class.

When is this due exactly?? If it is this week I would really only have time for a drawing, however if there are a few more weeks I could attempt a paper mache stone.
It is due next class, but I'll give you extra time if you'd really like to do a larger project and don't have the time this week. Also, it can be legos or other simpler methods than papier mâché.
Are we doing this tombstone on a piece of stone or paper? Also do we just create a person to put on are tombstone or does it have to be the ones posted?
Also are we carving everything onto the stone?
You can draw the tombstone, with no additional points.
Yes, you can create a person, but the inscription needs to follow the guidelines.
You would only carve the stone if you were doing a three dimensional stone for the extra points, AND it was made of a material that needed carving.
Do you have to write a story? What if it the deceased is a person who has not died yet? Do I have to go kill them first? I'm confused.
This qualifies as a Humanities grade, not a History grade, right?
